INSTALLATIONS

We’ve been privileged to design and fabricate major artworks for both public and commercial spaces for esteemed clients including The Connaught Hotel and the Royal Academy of Arts.

As well as full design and fabrications services we also integrate and commission our LED and technology systems into client fabrications and designs, with a particular specialism in interactive lighting and generative video content creation. By integrating sensors and data-capture devices into both sculptures and their environments we enable each piece to perform dynamically and respond immersively to its surroundings, blending technical precision with creative impact.

We've delivered numerous projects in collaboration with Wolfgang Buttress Studio, including installations for the reception areas of Nike and Sony headquarters, with work spanning global locations from Taiwan to Kentucky.

Below are some of the projects we’re proud to have been involved with and able to share.

IRIDESENSE

This striking installation, designed by Wolfgang Buttress Studio, stands proudly in the reception of 4 Handyside, on the  the corner of Handyside Street and Canal Reach in King’s Cross—a vibrant new hub for creativity and innovation, home to global brands like Sony and Nike.

Light Initiative’s in-house R&D team developed a bespoke Luminar fixture for the piece, using a 7-die LED array with custom optics capable of producing a rich colour spectrum: Red, True Green, Blue, Converted Yellow, Verde, and dual Lime Green diodes. These advanced luminaires were designed to illuminate 740 individual glass blocks—each uniquely etched and integrated into a custom metal framework fabricated by our production engineering team.

Installation was meticulously executed. Our crew marked out and prepped every structural element and glass block ahead of site delivery. Final commissioning was handled by our senior project team, who ensured seamless integration, including data-driven playback control that responded to sensors capturing the real-time movement in the surrounding flower bed.

Iridescence is a showcase of what happens when innovation, engineering precision, and artistic collaboration align—a project we’re proud to have brought to life.

BLOSSOM

Working closely with Buttress and Dr. Martin Bencsik, professor at University of Nottingham, Light Initiative developed a data-driven lighting system that dynamically transformed in real time. The subtle vibrations and inner workings of the 200-year-old Bramley apple tree in Nottingham, respond to create a visual experience in the Speed Art Museum in Louisvill, Kentucky. The LED tile pulses and shifts in light according to the biological rhythms of the tree, enhancing the immersive sensory environment of the installation.

This collaboration highlighted Light Initiative’s expertise in merging art and technology, contributing both the hardware and custom programming needed to translate living biological data into light-based storytelling.

I WANT MY TIME WITH YOU

We were given a handwritten phrase and a set of dimensions. The task: to transform Tracey Emin’s intimate message into a 20-metre-long suspended LED sculpture inside St Pancras International—one of London’s busiest and most iconic transport hubs, with the work commissioned by the Royal Academy of Arts.

To meet the demands of this high-profile public space, we engineered 1+1 LED redundancy into each letter. If a single LED line ever fails, a secondary system takes over instantly, ensuring uninterrupted illumination and minimise the service intervals required. Since its installation in 2018, the artwork has performed flawlessly.

CAD Render of Tracey’s Script

This was one of Emin’s first light-based pieces not made from traditional glass neon. The fidelity of the look had to be perfect. We fabricated a custom polycarbonate layer that was curved via CNC to follow every nuance of her handwriting. Our R&D and procurement teams sourced a rare grade of polycarbonate that combined optical clarity, clean machinability, and long-term durability—while meeting the safety regulations required for a suspended installation.

The sculpture’s lighting was also tuned to shift with its environment. During the day, it emits a soft, romantic pink glow. At night, it deepens in tone, maintaining its emotional resonance while adapting to the ambient light of the station.

To ensure the piece felt fully integrated with its historic surroundings, we colour-matched all structural supports to the architecture, allowing the sign to appear as if it floats effortlessly in space.

From a handwritten note to a monumental light sculpture, I Want My Time With You represents the meeting of engineering precision and poetic vision—an artwork that quietly transforms a space, felt by millions.
